Local girl Martina Guilherme Florencio, age 6, was the brainchild of an initiative of solidarity between children in Marbella and Haiti.
Together with the participation of her school, Colegio Platero de Marbella, Martina and her friends put together 'shoeboxes of love': shoeboxes filled with gifts and tokens of love for children injured in the earthquake of Jan 12th, and hospitalised in the General Hospital in Port au Prince, Haiti.
The shoeboxes contained toys, pens, paper, fans, and even rechargable torches, so the children could see at night. No detail was missed by Martina as she thought of what she would like to receive if she were one of the children in hospital as a result of the earthquake. There was even a personal message in Haitian Creole inside each box - giving the name and age of the child donating the box, along with well wishes for a speedy recovery.
The boxes were distributed by Martina's mother, Sharon Sands - who is currently forming a new humanitarian organisation "CampAid" to provide homes, employment and rehabilitation to people displaced by the earthquake and living in camps in Haiti.
Sharon and her team also distributed medical supplies and equipment donated by the USP Hospital in Marbella, with transportation costs being kindly sponsored by William Law.
