Learn Basic Genealogy

With summer coming to an end, it could be time to find a new interest or hobby.

Fancy learning about your family history, who were your grandparents, what did they do? where did they live. In the TV series "Who do you think you are?" famous celebrities trace their family history using some very basic genealogy tools. In the current series Larry Lamb the actor discovered he was a descendant of the Chipperfield Circus family and that he was from a long line

of showman.  June Brown was of Sephardi jewish heritage. Seb coe discovered that he was from a line of influential public figures.

If you are interested in other peoples family history you are spoilt for choice With programs like "Long Lost Family" on ITV and "Who do you think you are?" on BBC. You can see how in some cases people can connect with their past.

What about your own family, are their mysteries you would like to solve? Family you remember but have lost contact with? were you adopted and feel it´s time to learn about your heritage?

From October 2011 the U3A are holding a Basic genealogy course every Saturday morning at the Alhaurin Hotel the course is scheduled to last 10 weeks.

The course will include the basics and cover the building blocks needed before you start, covering How to build a basic family tree, What records are available? The course leader will get you thinking about written record sheets vs. computer based record keeping. As the course moves on you will explore resources for ordering records from archives worldwide including using the internet for research.

Come along Saturday morning, drink coffee, learn to build a family tree and find out about YOUR ANCESTORS.
