After 30 years thrashing about beach casting I eventually realised I had reached the limit of my technique.I tried more powerful and expensive rods but they were unmanageable and when ever I did hit it as hard as I could 9 times out of 10. I would end up cracking off (that’s when the reel lets out line too fast and in a fraction of a second you end up with a birds nest…well that’s the polite term). I was also endangering other anglers by not being in control, a 4 ounce lead weight travelling at these sorts of speeds is lethal!
